Couple and Individual Therapy Services

In my marriage and relationship therapy practice I welcome couples who are looking to overcome negative dynamics in their relationship and build a bridge to a healthy and happy partnership. I provide couples therapy to people who are linked romantically (married, living together, engaged) as well as to individuals who are struggling with issues in their life. Because we are all connected to others (as partners, colleagues, family members) understanding our underlying relationship issues and challenges is helpful in all aspects of life.

Getting Started with Couples or Individual Therapy

A successful relationship therapy experience is first built by finding a therapist you feel comfortable with and can relate to. I believe it is very important for potential clients to interview therapists. Before we schedule our first relationship therapy session we will spend some time talking together on the phone. I would like to get a sense of what is troubling you and what you are hoping to achieve in couples or individual therapy.

I am happy to answer questions about the way I work and tell you a bit about my background. This might be helpful in making your decision to begin therapy. If we both feel we are a good match, we can set up an appointment for our first relationship therapy session. If we aren’t a good fit, I will be happy to give you the names of other therapists whom you can contact in your search for just the right couples or individual therapist.

What Does Couples Therapy Look Like?

I am often asked how long I expect couples therapy to last. The answer depends on what your specific issues are and your willingness to discover new ways of relating to one another. Some couples come for a few sessions to tune up their relationship skills while others come for a longer period of time to work through more deeply entrenched problems.

During our couples therapy sessions you will learn how to be more mindful and calm in how you respond to each other when there is a conflict or a problem. You will learn to describe your reaction to the problem rather than blaming or escalating the emotional atmosphere between you. Couples therapy will help you develop relationship skills to effectively work together to solve problems and issues that are a normal part of any relationship. I will also show you how to ask questions so that you and your partner can understand exactly what each other’s intentions are.

Marriage therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. When you first begin therapy, I may suggest that you and your partner come to see me once a week. After we establish a strong foundation in your relationship it is certainly feasible to discuss the option of attending couples therapy sessions less frequently. Taking the time and energy to put into relationship therapy can be challenging and I will strive to help you find a balance between “work” and play. I will always be honest about the progress that I see and am open to discussing how long you want to continue in couples counseling.
